I spoke to a fellow kayak fisher recently who had a really bad experience with an inflatable kayak from a certain big-box chain store. It was heavy and the boat performed really poorly. He was enquiring about a hard-shell kayak and was generally pretty disheartened. I urged him not to give up on inflatables as their convenience and ease make it simple on so many levels. To help others, I did a quick walk through of my own personal setup to show others what is possible with regards to customisation so that you can get your kayak exactly how you like it. The StraitEdge Angler Pro from Advanced Elements takes fishing from an inflatable kayak to the next level! We are asked quite often about kayaks for big and tall guys and the Angler Pro fits the bill. It has a total weight capacity of 180kgs and can easily accommodate paddlers upwards of 6 foot tall (180cm +). There is lots of leg room and the raised deck chair seat sits you up slightly above the floor taking the pressure off the leg muscles.
The angler pro is great for those looking to save space. In fact, when packed away, the carry bag, measures a measly 81cm x 46cm x 28cm making it easy to store in garages, laundries and perfect for those that are travelling, camping or caravaning. Like all inflatable kayaks it also means that you dont require roof racks or bulky trailers.
Weighing in at 20.5 kgs, the Angler pro is considerably lighter than hardshell fishing kayaks and is easier to transport thanks to the carry handles and back pack straps that come with the bag.
Setting up the StraitEdge Angler Pro takes around ten minutes using the double action hand pump that comes with the kayak. This process is even faster with the use of an electric inflator. It can fill the chambers with air quickly before using the double action hand pump to bring the chambers up to pressure.
Pack up is even faster as there is no drying time. The floor and outer chambers can be wiped dry at the end of your trip. Simply wipe the kayak dry, deflate the chambers in reverse order and pack away in the bag. The bags are generously sized too so pack away isn't like packing away a tent. If there is a fair bit of water in the kayak, you can also remove the floor if more drying is required.
The Angler Pro has one of the thickest drop stitch floors out of any kayak in the Advanced Elements range. The rigid drop stitch floor uses the same technology as stand-up paddle boards and when inflated, and provides a rigid platform that can be used for standing or sight casting. In addition to the drop stitch floor, aluminium ribs built into the front and the rear allow the kayak to move through the water with ease. It’s 97cm width also makes it incredibly stable and great for beginners or advanced paddlers alike.
The outer hull is made from three layers of inter-woven PVC tarpaulin, which is tough and resistant to abrasions and punctures. In addition to this, the bow and stern also contain hard plastic plates and 3mm aluminium ribs that both sit behind the hull, providing even more rigidity for on-the-water performance and protection. The side chambers are constructed from PVC tarpaulin with a separate innertube providing 4 layers of protection between the air in the chambers and the outside world.
The thick drop stitch floor is also covered in a 3mm neoprene which is not only soft under foot, but also provides an added layer of protection from things like fish spikes and dog claws if your furry friend is onboard.
The removable deck chair style seat is a great feature of this kayak. It has a high-back aluminium frame and adjustable straps so you can customise it just the way you like it. It clips into the kayak via four d-rings, so if you happen to capsize, the seat won’t sink to the bottom of the ocean. Its easy to remove and can be unclipped if you are chasing a comfy seat on the edge of an estuary or beach to enjoy a lunch or a break. All in all the seat is incredibly comfortable and ready for long days on the water. When finished, many people like to store their seat separately but it can also be folded and stored in the bag with the kayak.
The Angler Pro also comes with a fin that can be mounted via the US style fin box underneath. The fin box can also be used to mount a range of electric motors giving you the option to power your watercraft for trolling or travelling in style from A to B.
The Angler Pro is equipped with two accessory rails that you can use to mount a range of add ons such as rod holders, bait boards, camera mounts and many others. The accessory rails are designed to be removed when not in use so you can leave your accessories mounted and simply stow them in your bag at the end of your trip. From there you can choose the accessories in the Railblaza range that you wish to use, well and truly solving the problem of no drill / no screw accessories for inflatable kayaks.
One feature that doesn't get enough attention on this watercraft is the addition of over inflation valves. This kayak is tough, rugged and ready for length periods on the water. When paddling in direct sunlight for extended periods of time, the air in the chambers can expand, so the design team at Advanced Elements have added over inflation valves that self equalise, meaning if the air in the chamber starts to expand, the kayak will take care of itself leaving you to focus on where the next bite is likely to come from!
